Expert day "Multilingualism in the Berlin education system - reality or just a dream of many parents?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the occasion of the European Day of Languages, the Berlin-wide symposium "Multilingualism in the Berlin education system - reality or just a dream of many parents?" will take place again this year. Since 2015, we have been organizing annual specialist days in cooperation with various stakeholders with the aim of making multilingualism visible as a potential and strengthening institutional support for languages of origin in the education system.
According to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office, more than 120 languages are spoken in Berlin. There are currently state-funded native language lessons (HSU) in three languages: Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish. Additional languages — including Polish and Russian — are to be offered from September 2021. At the same time, nine European schools in Berlin are being funded by the Senate Department. In view of the diversity of languages, however, Berlin schools still have some catching up to do in the area of state-funded teaching of the native language.
🔹 We would like to discuss with our guests at the round table how Berlin children, schools and society as a whole can gain more advantages through the great potential of multilingualism and the expansion of the HSU offer. 🔹
"How speechlessness can be overcome" Sensitization approaches to multilingual acquisition instead of speechlessness, an example of the Vietnamese community
08/12/2021 | 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
on-line
The Barnim-Gymnasium was the first school in Berlin to succeed in convincing the Senate to offer native language classes in Vietnamese from the school year 2021/2022. This is a big step for a project that is still in its infancy and is also a huge success for the community.
In the workshop, Thanh Thùy Luong, the former head of the Vietnam AG at Barnim-Gymnasium, will report on her experiences with the native language acquisition of students with a connection to Vietnam. What is meant by “speechlessness”? Where are the special features and which approaches to raising awareness of multilingual learning (using the example) in the Vietnamese community are there?
Workshop leader: Thanh Thùy Luong - cultural interpreter, school social worker and head of the Vietnam-AG at Barnim-Gymnasium (Berlin - Lichtenberg).
Trường Barnim-Gymnasium là trường đầu tiên ở Berlin thuyết phục được Bộ giáo dục đưa môn học “Tiếng Việt - ngôn ngữ cội nguồn” vào giảng dạy bắt đầuọc 20 năm22 h. Đây là một bước tiến lớn cho một dự án còn rất trẻ, đồng thời là một thành công lớn cho cộng đồng người Việt.
Diễn giả Lương Thanh Thuỳ sẽ chia sẻ kinh nghiệm của mình về đề tài giáo dục ngôn ngữ cội nguồn khi cô còn phụ trách lớp ngoại khoá tiếng Namạt-Viườtium Barn hoim. “Speechlessness” được nêu ở đây có ý như thế nào? Đâu là đặc điểm của cộng đồng người Việt và những gợi ý khích lệ việc giáo dục đa ngôn ngữ nào sẽ phù hợp với họ?
More than 120 languages are spoken in Berlin, but only nine of these languages of origin are funded at the State European Schools and three languages in the form of native language teaching. The declared intention of the Senate Department for Education, Family and Youth is to expand this offer and to open it up to other languages of origin or to make it accessible.
Migrant organizations represent the interests of civil society. In this context, the implementation of the native language teaching and the recognition of the native language - as a second or third foreign language - is a goal of her work.
The aim of this workshop is to sensitize migrant families with regard to language teaching. In terms of content, it is about the legal basis for the
native language lessons at Berlin schools, as well as the conditions under which parents are entitled to native language lessons for their children.
Workshop leader: Safter Çınar
Eğitim kurumlarında okullarda ve çocuk yuvalarında veli hakkı olarak çokdillilik
Berlin'de 120'den fazla dil konuşulmaktadır, ancak Avrupa Devlet Okullarında bunların sadece dokuzu eş ağırlıklı olarak desteklenmekte ve desteklenen üç tanesi köken dili dersi şeklinde verilmektedir. Eğitim, Aile ve Gençlik Senatörlüğü`nün açıklaması, bu desteği genişletmek, diğer köken dillerine açmak ve ulaşılabilir kılmaktır.
Göçmen örgütleri sivil toplumun çıkarlarını temsil etmektedir. Bu bağlamda köken dili derslerinin uygulanması ve köken dillerinin ikinci veya üçüncü yabancı dil olarak tanınması çalışmalarının bir amacıdır. Bu çalıştay ile göçmen ailelerin köken dili öğretimi konusunda duyarlı hale getirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Follow-up event: State anti-discrimination law in a practical test in Pankow
05/11/2021 | 5.00 p.m.-7.00 p.m.
on-line
"We're going into the second round"
So that the State Anti-Discrimination Act (LADG) does not remain a toothless tiger, but an effective instrument to defend oneself against racism and other ideologies of inequality, we would like to inform multipliers and activists in and from Pankow about the innovations and talk about the opportunities and challenges that arise surrender to the LADG.
After our great kick-off event in April, we will meet two representatives at this event: from associations who have the right to classify. Both organizations advise people who have experienced discrimination and fight with them for their rights on the basis of the LADG. The focus of this event is therefore the report on previous practical experience.
AK Diversity: The state anti-discrimination law in a practical test in Pankow
04/20/2021 | 10.00 a.m. - 12.00 p.m.
on-line
When people report on their experiences of discrimination, authorities and offices play a major role as the place where it happens. The previous, nationwide Anti-Discrimination Act (AGG) does not apply here to customers who experience discrimination at the job center or citizens' office. This gap is now being closed in Berlin by the State Anti-Discrimination Act - LADG for short.
For those affected, there are new ways to take action against discrimination more easily. But very few people know that.
So that the State Anti-Discrimination Act (LADG) does not remain a toothless tiger, but an effective instrument to defend oneself against inequalities, we would like to inform multipliers and active people in and from Pankow about the innovations and talk about the opportunities and challenges that arise from the LADG .
That is why we invited Eva Andrades from the umbrella organization for anti-discrimination advice centers. In a first step, Eva Andrades will explain the new opportunities for those affected, but also the challenges for clubs and associations.
In a second step, Ed Greve from the Berlin Migration Council reports on initial experiences that those affected in Berlin have already had with the LADG.
In a third step, people report on specific cases from the counseling work about their experiences. Based on these cases, we are working out what new opportunities the LADG in Berlin offers.
Expert discussion: native language lessons in the Berlin education system
04/22/2021 | 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
on-line
Discussion of native language lessons in the Berlin education system - reality or just a dream of many parents?
Dr. Mark Hamprecht from the Senate Department for Education, Family and Youth in an expert discussion with Dr. Anna Mróz, BEFaN network
According to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office, more than one hundred and twenty languages are spoken in Berlin. You could say: the city has enormous potential in this regard. How is this diversity reflected in the Berlin education system?
State-funded native language classes are currently taking place in 3 languages (Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish), for comparison: in Brandenburg there are 8 languages, in North Rhine-Westphalia 23 languages.
As a result, the Berlin education system is extremely inadequately geared towards the resources of multilingualism. As part of the technical discussion, we would like to discuss the following questions:
:: Which developments can be expected in the future?
:: Can the new concept of multilingualism contribute to promoting the language skills of Berlin children? The Senate does not directly promote the competencies.
:: In what dimension and by which languages will the range of native language lessons at Berlin schools be expanded?
The event is aimed at all interested parents, experts from migrant organizations, teachers and educational professionals.
Are welcome classes a discrimination, a temporary measure or a shelter?
03/26/21 | 8:00 pm-10:00pm
on-line
The entry of immigrant students into the Berlin school is the “welcome class”. Apart from their peers, the new students are taught for one to two years, mainly in German. The resources and contacts of their host school are only available to them to a limited extent. This leads to critical questions: What exactly should the students be taught in these classes? How is the highly differentiated learning biography taken into account? What help does this sensitive group get during and after the transition to mainstream schools? How is their multilingualism valued, used and further developed? Is there any experience with integrating, inclusive forms of schooling? What should follow this permanent temporary arrangement? Those affected, educational researchers, WiKo teachers and politicians have their say.
Speaker: Mareike Heller, educational scientist in the field of flight and migration, Stefanie Remmlinger (Greens), Dennis Buchner (SPD), those affected, Wiko teacher
Panel discussion: The value of rare languages in Berlin
03/26/21 | 5: 30-7: 30 p.m.
on-line
One of the important parts of our identity is language.
Our mother tongues allow us to develop emotions, openness and security in a society. Culture or cultures are also part of languages. Pankow was traditionally known as a European district. In recent years, however, new people have come and with them new linguistic constellations and perspectives in life.
The topic of multilingualism is present and relevant in our society.
Today we would like to discuss with representatives of Latin American or African languages who live in Berlin. For this purpose we organized a panel discussion with three associations that promote Quechua, Mapudungun and Swahili in their communities, families as civil society organizations.
Speakers:
Mrs. Anastacia Nganga (Swahili, Swahili) - Swahili
Mrs. Daniela Zambrano - Quechua.
Mrs. Ornella Amichetti Quentrequeo - Mapudungun
